Craft Club

The other week I enrolled to join a Craft Club Volunteer Training Day.
Craft Club is a new national campaign to support craft learning in schools both as part of the core curriculum and in organised free after-school clubs. Launched by the Crafts Council, The UK Handknitting Association and The W I the first scheme is called 'Knit 1 Pass it On' and is based on a hugely successful pilot project run last year at Lindens Primary School where they constructed a 'Recycled Rainforest' entirely from knitting!
Why choose knitting? Well obviously I'm biased but it's a great activity for all ages, male and female. It improves manual dexterity and maths skills, is a great medium for personal expression, gives a huge sense of achievement, encourages resourcefulness in sourcing materials, requires low tech equipment to set up......once Craft Clubbers have learnt how to knit they are asked to teach their skills to someone else... it's that simple. And who knows where their newly found talents may lead them after that?
The scheme needs the support of skilled and enthusiastic volunteers to work with teachers to set up the clubs. Having completed the day I am now a 'Craft Champion' and am all set to champion craft in schools.
Ideas for projects and how to get involved in the scheme, forums and a gallery where pupils can upload their work can be found on the Craft Club website.
